yeah Yodslaenklai is the winner..i was there.. it is like the best day of my life watching them live...anyone saw when jabar and rafik doing wai kru...jabar step in front of rafik that was so funny hahaha
Just got back from Indoor Stadium . . . and yes what a great night of fights deserving the final of an exciting series.
Also, what a great deal to watch it live for only $25 (PayPal promotion) - you got to watch 6 fights in all, a return of the Kallang wave 'indoor' version, some cheering competition between fans of Soren & Sean Wright, Yod & JWP and also a birthday song singing by a group of audience which eventually led the rest of the audience joining in the fun. Fantastic atmosphere ! Estimated about 5000 spectators !
2 Exhibition matches of 3 rounds
1) Louis Wong (Singapore, SEA Games representative) VS Sukadi Flash (Indonesia)
A surprisingly interesting flight, the two fighters were quite evenly matched, with fast punches and kicks making body contact. Sukadi Flash showed a hint of his agility during his Wai-Khru when he bounces about to move to the four different directions while in kneeling position. During the first round, Sukardi started fast and furiously by landing fast punches to Louis with his guard up. Sukardi somehow always manages to back away from Louis when Louis counter attack by lurches forward with a hook or swing. Louis though slower, seems to be the more muscular built fighter with more power in his strikes. Louis finally landed a direct hook to Sukardi’s face in the third round which ended in KO. Louis showed potential and warmed up the local audiences in their cheers.
2) Brenda Shee (Singapore, SEA Games Bronze medalist, 18 yrs old, 5 fights, 3 wins) VS Sokron (Thailand, 42 fights, 35 wins) - Female fighters
From the fight statistics, I thought the Thai girl with ten times more fight experience would surely trash the Singapore girl. Besides, the Thai is bigger built than the Singapore gal. What a surprise to see that Brenda with only 5 fights actually displayed superior techniques, faster and more solid strikes than the Thai. There are many landed punches to the face from both sides but the punches seem to lack the power to even stagger the victim. However, in round 2, Brenda landed several continuous punches to the Thai that resulted in a count. By the third round the Thai gal seemed exhausted and her moves becomes sluggish while the Singapore girl actually becomes more focus and aggressive, scoring many strikes to her opponent’s face. Although no KO, Brenda won convincingly on points. Interesting fight with lots of action even though the strikes lack the power of a man fight.
3) Soren VS Sean Wright for the Intercontinental Champion Belt
Very close and evenly matched technical fight until the last round. Sean seems to have the upper hand in the first four rounds, and I would have thought he would have won if it's a 4 round fight. Although both fighters scores strikes quite evenly for the first four rounds, Sean seemed to land slightly more direct punches to Soren’s face or tweep kicks to the body. But in the fifth round, Sean seems to have tired out and was not responding to Soren's punches and elbows. Soren must have caught up in this round and won on points. Soren became the new Intercontinental Champion Belt holder.
4) Zach VS Zidov (Rematch)
Another quite evenly matched fight. Zach displayed superior techniques and scores with his kicks. Zach manages to sweep Zidov off his feet a couple of times. Both Zach and Zidov did manage to connect their punches to their opponent face. Zach's eyes were actually swollen after the fight. In the 4th round, Zach connected a very nasty elbow on Zidov nose, and it bleed badly. But Zidov as usual display his toughness by continuing to fight after the blood gets wiped off. Zach kicks to Zidov causes him to bend over in pain, not so much in the power of the kick, but rather where it lands – his groan. This happens not once, not twice but three times ! It’s almost like Zach telling Zidov – these are for you making a Singapore girl pregnant! J ! But Zidov, as always got back up to continue the fight. I must say Zidov has a big heart and pure soul, because he still acknowledges Zach’s friendly gloves tap even after the third time he got kicked in his balls, never once thought that his opponent kicked him there on purpose. It was only in the ‘replay’ on the screen on top of the ring during the break that the audience got to see those kick-in-the-groan in slow motion – drawing the Ooooooh from the audience.
In the fifth round, Zidov desperately tries to KO Zach but Zach dominated and landed a few more punches to Zidov’s face which causes more serious bleeding until the fight was stopped by the judge and Zach won by TKO. The crowd started booing – not at the fighters but rather at the judges for stopping the fight. Stephen then announces over the microphone that the fight is stopped to ensure the safety of the boys and won over the audience who applauded. Finally, Zach not so much got his revenge but rather won back his honour in front of his country folks.
5) Dzhabar VS Rafik (Grudge Match) and for the European Championship Belt
This would have seemed like the most interesting match after all the built-up in excitement and anticipation from the previous 4 matches which were very exciting and interesting. However, for a grudge match, it was disappointingly mild. In round one, I think there are less than 10 punches and kicks throw in total ! Both fighters seem to be weary of each other and did not make any aggressive moves. I guess Dzhabar must have remembered how Rafik almost won JWP who beat him in the last semi-final, and Rafik must have seen how Dzhabar KO Soren in the first round with a powerful right hook. It was only in the third round onwards, did the fight starts to warm up, with Rafik doing his signature spinning elbow a couple of times and Dzhabar throw a couple of his powerful right hook. Unfortunately none of these connected.
The fight was very close because there wasn't many significant contact if any at all. Dzhabar won by points 50 - 49, 49 - 48, and all 3 judges unanimously scores 1 point difference between the two with advantage to Dzhabar. After the fight when Dzhabar thanks his fans over the microphone, he concluded with by saying he forgive Rafik. Rafik also spoke and surprisingly came across as more PR polished, gentleman and humble, even congratulating Dzhabar on his win. Like the motto on the Contender Asia T-shirt (got free from Paypal Zone tickets holder) – Fear None Respect All – Hopefully Rafik truly got it now.
6) Yodsanklai VS JWP (Grand Final)
What can I say, it is indeed the fight of the night. JWP displays the ferocity of an aging tiger trying to have its last fearsome roar. Yodsanklai, display his full range of kicks from his signature left high kicks, to low sweep, thigh kicks, tweep kicks etc. In fact Yod did tweep JWP many times whenever JWP seems too eager to lurch forward to execute fast multiple punches to his head. In round one, Yod manages to knock JWP to the floor, which JWP quickly got up. JWP did that multiple punch attack on Yod a number of times, with Yod dodging most of it, and Yod twice shrug his shoulders at JWP to tell him that he did not do any damage ! Yod connected 2 high kick to JWP head, but luckily, the impact was blocked by JWP hands. it did cut JWP eyebrown in the 2/3 round. There were a couple of instances when Yod execute the round house kick, we could see sweat droplets throw up by the force of the kick reflecting the lights, reinforcing the power of Yod’s kicks – its so damn awesome! like some natural special effects !
JWP to his credit still manages to entertain the crowd with a rarely seen move – he dodges Yod high kick by squatting down ! If only he combine it with a sweep to Yod’s leg to topple him, then it would have been a truly classic. In the 3th round, Yod land a punch on JWP face that threw him onto the canvass resulting in a count. JWP knowing that he could only win with a KO now, becomes more agressive in his multiple punches combo - which to his credit did scores and number of punches to Yod's face, but Yod somehow always managed to keep his composure to respond with a solid punch or elbow to JWP face / body. There was one punch which produces a ‘thud’ sound so loud that I could hear it even from the terrace. A very, very exciting fight with credit to JWP for putting up a ALL-OUT effort show ! In fact in the last and final round, JWP charging punches landed a couple of times on Yod’s face, which did momentarily stun him.
I could almost replay that moment in slow motion when I was in dilemma - both routing that JWP might succeed in KO Yody and let the old tiger has his last roar of honour and at the same time, hoping that Yody succeed in preventing a KO to win the title and let the deserving champion from a poor background take home the $150K to his mother. And when the final bell sounded, Yod knew that he had won and celebrates by running around and jumps onto the four corners of the ring, each time drawing cheers and applaud from the audience as he raises his arms. Not only was the fight fantastic with both fighters going ALL-OUT, the emotion that every punch and kicks drawing the Wooooh and Aaaaaah from the heart of the audience was truly amazing and can only be experienced live. This fight together with the others were certainly deserving to be in the Grand Final to an exciting series !
Thanks sam for your compliment. I was hesitant about posting the spoilers, but since u disclosed the results, I thought I'll share fight details, I have always enjoyed your fight reports :-)
From the MC announcement, Yod's fight record is very very impressive - 212 fights 160+ wins. Gosh - 212 fights at the age of 22 while JWP at the age of 32 has only 97 fights.
Both Yod and Dzhabar are only 22years old and they are already at the top level of the sport. we'll sure to see more of them in the future ! Hopefully, in Contender Asia season 2 we get to see some top level K1 Japanese / Korean fighters such as Masato and Top Thai fighter such as Buakaw Por Pramuk and dutch figher such as Andy Souwer.
is there going to be video of this event to watch for all us less fortunate people without axn or the chance of being there? Is the final episode going to show all these fights ??
Hey guys, just wanted to ask.... did anyone hear the announcer mention something about a contender grand prix in august or something like that? I thought I did, but I may have been mistaken.... =/
Great report mle0ng. I had expected Yods to win against JWP and am glad JWP went down fighting. JWP's such a great guy but there can b only one winner.
Yod's next fight against Levin Artem at K-1 MAX Scandinavia 2008, Stockholm, Sweden on May 31, 2008
and the much anticipated fight against Malaipet " Diamond " Sasiprapa
at International Muay Thai Fight Night, Montego Bay, Jamaica on June 20th, 2008.
They are not going to get Dutch fighters or Japanese fighters unless they fly them in and pay. Let's see if they are willing to do that. Also staying at 70 kilos means not seeing as many of the Thais that are currently fighting. Those light weights don't ahve much of a career--it's over at the peak within a year.
Like to see them move up to bigger weights> Oceania can provide some very good fighters adn Japan, too.
At this weight it would be from K Max and not K 1. And there are loads of great fighters there--but they cannot begin to pay to bring them in and they won't.
That goes for the ex Super League fighters also--they just won't pay to get that talent pool. It's cheap going the Thai route and picking up the farangs who are hanging out in Thailand.
They would do better to switch to a K max style fight format, though. Muay Thai is not popular in it's true Thai format in many places and if you want to cash in on the Japanese mega money you have to change. (Not that the first season was scoring like true MT in Thailand.)
-Why organise the finale wif 1 more fight to go? U could have more ppl interested in the event after the JWP/Dzabar war.Thank god i went to the last semis.
-Btw, wheres the bald, big dude who do the announcements? Cant believe they ditch him.
-F'king pissed @ organiser decide to give my seats to those Paypals fools. Soo much for being a fanboy buying the tix early.
-Good call doing the stage for walk in like K1.
-Seriously,pls decide if u want music to be played during fights or not.
-Good matchups but I just dun get Soren/Wright. I prefer to see David the American.
-The f'king boos is downright disgusting!! Seriously, these ppl are idiots. They even boo Soren's mom (me thinks). These ppl are not educated about the sport and boo anything. They watch too much pro-wrestling. (not a hater,i like it too)
-Get it in yr head. This is an Asian country. We dun go crazy during fight intervals. See Japanese fans in fight org like Pride,K1,Dream,etc. U can hear a pin drop when fighters fight and only cheer during highspots. Oh btw, they are educated fans and nvr boo!!
-The birthday song is moronic. Bunch of attention whores.
Fat hope to bring K1 fighters but my wishlist is Badr Hari/Schidlt. BAdr Hari just destroyed Sefo. Anybody watched K1 today? Brilliant. Completed my weekend of fights.
In conclusion, i like the series. Bunch of dudes from all over the world together,no lame reality drama like in the Ultimate Fighter except for the brawl..which is unreal. thank u Rafik for bringing in drama.
Before i forget..congrats to Zach, our local hero! LOL@ those who support Zidov. He is soo one dimensional.

Anyway since it's now public, I'd like to say a couple things.
1. Boos from the crowd:
I booed at the ref for counting Zidov when he collapsed from a ball kick by Zach (second kick to the balls). He almost counted Zidov out! That was just bad referreeing in my eyes. So SOME of the boo was justified although Stefan Fox is right, we shouldn't have booed the ref for stopping the fight.

Even if unintentional, it should have been point deduction. (3) stoppage of fight. For #3, this one ppl were wrong to Boo but considering they were already unhappy, I understand where the fans were coming from. But he did make the correct decision to stop fight.
2. They need to plan the music better. It would play then stop 1/2 way through the fight. Very inconsistent and noticable.
3. The crowd had great spirit. I hope all the fighters there, win or lose, could see how much we support and appreciate their dedication.
Indo vs S'pore:
Indo guy was technically better, faster and more precise. He staggered S'pore guy a few times and pretty much dominated round 1.
The s'pore guy, although not as fast or techically sound, was simply much more powerful. The indo guy was getting rocked the few times he did get hit until he kenna KO by S'pore.
The Girls Fight:
The girls were so small! In fact, it was the Singapore girl who was bigger, taller than the Thai girl. Surprisingly it was Singapore that had the better technique. Not much in the way of blocks, defence fromboth girls. Seemed that they just took the hits rather than block.
Soren vs Sean:
Even matchup. Sean is quicker, & stronger and is well rounded with punches and low kicks. Soren is technically better, has the reach advantage.
Unfortunately Sean ran out of petrol by the 4th round, although he tried. By 5th round his tank was empty and he had no counter to anything Soren threw. He also got careless by round 5 where he was constantly at the most effective range for Soren to throw his best attacks. Sean won at least 2 rounds, with the 3rd even imo. But the last 2 rounds, where judges start really scoring, Soren threw his best at Sean.
Both got hit by some deadly attacks but in the end Soren won. I found this fight to be the best fought in the undercard fights.
Zidov vs Zach:
Zach actually got quite a few boos and jeering comments about how he should throw his shoulder again. But he fought extremely well, as I knew he would and pretty much owned Zidov. But by round 4/5, I felt Zach didn't know how else to take Zidov out because the huy just wouldn't give up.
Zach has some very real potentialm but right now i think he still lacks a lot of experience. I saw him make some really bad error in judgement during the fight that a better fighter (for example Dzabar or JWP) would have taken advantage of.
Personally I felt David should have been brought back to fight instead of Zach.
Dzabar vs Rafik:
Surprisingly a very subdued fight. It quickly became quite clear that Dazabar is much more disciplined in this fight than in previous fights. I felt this was mainly due to the fact that Rafik is a very skilled fighter who is fast & powerful. Trying to brawl with him would reduce his chances of winning as Rafik is a very unconventional Nak Muay.
At the end, I think Dazabar deserved the win although it was very very even fight. At the end, he did tell the crowd that he changed his fight to be more disciplined in the ring.
My comment about Dzabar has alway sbeen that this guy is good. Young, powerful, fast. But he tends toget hotheaded in the ring and that could cost him fights. I stand by my opinion that if Dzabar puts more discipline in the ring, he'll start winning and moving up the ranks more.
Good fight. Not explosive and not as entertaining to watch as Soren/Sean but very well executed and well measured fight.
People booed Rafik. I cheered for him when he entered. He did, after all entertain us quite a lot, and even if you don't like him, respect the fact that the man has got skills and balls to back it up. Good job to both men.
Finale: JWP vs Yod
Before any fights happened and the MC accounced who would be fighting Yodsaenklai and it was JWP, the crowd went absolutely wild!!! It was fantastic.
On to the fight then...
JWP lost weight. He looked extremely fit and he was back to form (he was very heavy and big and a bit slow during the show). It was clear he trained and prepared hard for this fight. And he really gave it everything he had. Speed, technique, skills, determination,... everything.
But Yod is also just as determined, much younger, stronger, precise, deliberate and calculated.
Both fighters, imo are very evenly matched, but Yod has him on youth (and that can make all the difference). Both being very aggressive and both taking turns commanding the ring.
Watching these two fights, it is quite clear why they are at the top of the sport. The way they move. The way they take advantage of openings and create openings. And especially in how they counter is many levels above the other fighters that night.
People paid $$ to see 2 top fighters fight and they gave that to us in spades.
Unfortunately, JWP dropped his guard for just a split second and that was all Yod needed to drop him to the canvas. The second time he got dropped, Yod was just more precise with his punch. JWP threw his best shots at Yod but that guy just doesn't want to lose this fight. Yod does get visibly rocked a number of times but he shrugs it off even after a hail of blows that land squarely on his face!
JWP as well takes a lot of punishing blows from Yod but perserveres and counters.
What I noticed during the fight was that no matter what the other fighter threw, both had an answer and a counter to it. And this is why these 2 guys are considered Legends in the sport.
Yod eventually wins the fight, but JWP didn't make it easy for him. You just don't see many fights where both fighters go all out for 5 complete rounds. This is what these fighters did and the crowd loved them both for thsi top level display of craftsmanship and determination.
In the end, I think it is clear that if JWP was a few years younger, the fight *could* have gone to him. This fight to me was a fight of youth vs age and unfortunately, when 2 people are equally as skilled, the younger one will most likely win, which is what happened here.
In the other forum posted above, someone said that JWP wasn't that good because his attacks didn't do damage to Yod. JWP IS good. That night, Yod was just more resilient. It wasn't a question of who had the better skill that won the fight. Compare how Bruce & Sean (both very good fighters) faired against Yod and how well JWP faired against him...vastly, vastly different.
Yod, well deserved victory. JWP fantastic performance, especially with the evade. As a bystander, I didn't even see the kick coming. By the time the kick came, JWP had already evaded it. Simply fantastic display of prowess.
Thanks for all the details of the match guys.Although my body wasnt there, but my spirit is present there. My support for my fav Yodsaenklai has never decreases since the start of the contender asia as i know he will make it. Congrats Yodsaenklai for the win.Looking forward to all his matches now.Update always about Yod okay!
The "evade" was awesome! I also liked how the entire arena was on its feet for Round 5 !
Hahaha yeah, that spin low on the ground that JWP did to avoid Yod's kick was beautiful. All of us were caught by surprise, I think. (in fact, it was so well-timed i might have even thought JWP was simply tyco! But considering his skill and experience, I think he definitely was prepared for that kick) =)
Dam! are they really going to show all those fights on AXN and if they do someone please post them. im dying to see them. I didnt realize that they already fought the finale. Why would they do that before the show aired? It was supposed to be shown live wasnt it?
I second the above coment. I'd like to see all the fights fought, not only the final. How long is the final episode going to be? If it's one hour, I guess we'll get only the final.
i don't think they'll show everything on tv. it's such a shame though. cause there were so many awesome moments from that night. we'll just have to wait and see!
sweet evade jwp. Yod has one mean looking left kick. I can't wait to see the fight. In a week or two.
Jwp you said earlier it was the best training camp you've ever been in regarding the contender house. Is that because all the fighters were pushing each other to the next level, or the equipment/training gear was top notch, the trainers or just a combination of these factors.
ahahahaha. Yeah that was hilarious! Priceless move, Dzhabar, Priceless. Totally agree with you man! Best day of my life being der to catch them in the flesh. Dzhabar finally got to kick Rafik's butt!
Yeah..of course...!!!

Simply fantastic display of prowess.
well worth every single dollar.

All I have left is my right.

Dam! are they really going to show all those fights on AXN and if they do someone please post them. im dying to see them.
:)

congrats, universe. you win.

sweet evade jwp. Yod has one mean looking left kick. I can't wait to see the fight. In a week or two.
Jwp you said earlier it was the best training camp you've ever been in regarding the contender house. Is that because all the fighters were pushing each other to the next level, or the equipment/training gear was top notch, the trainers or just a combination of these factors.
oh YEAH! that's the one!
ahahahaha.
Yeah that was hilarious! Priceless move, Dzhabar, Priceless.
Totally agree with you man! Best day of my life being der to
catch them in the flesh. Dzhabar finally got to kick Rafik's butt!
wow, guys, thanks for all the info. Congrats to Yod! And to JWP too..
